gigs thru 2022

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'”

— Erma Bombeck

Hello World.

I am Bobby J of New Orleans, Louisiana. Any wrinkles means I've laughed a lot; any grey hair means I've cared for others; the scars simply mean I've lived.

Connecting to the music world was easy. I was born into a family of Gospel singers in New Orleans, a city known for its vibrant music scene with clubs and churches on every other corner. Early on, my predisposition was to play drums. Self-taught, I played in both the Gospel and secular realms. Unexpectedly, while on a drumming gig, the club owner (who managed the house band) was impressed by my vocal talent, pulled me to center stage, handed me a lead vocal microphone, and the rest is history.

Subsequently, I dedicated myself to performing multiple genres of cover music, generally just singing audiences to a happier place. I've been told I shadow artists like Jeffrey Osborne, Charlie Wilson, and Pastor Marvin Winans but I realize I've only been being me because everyone else is already taken. I must admit my musical preference has been secular throwback, nostalgia, songs that stir powerful emotion. So many good memories connect to the old school music. It renews audiences while they reflect on where they were and what they were doing when one of their favorites is played.

But now I'm taking this thing in a new direction, focusing more on inspirational and gospel that feeds the spirit. I'll still polish my shoes, starch my shirts, and crease my slacks. And after better that five decades of live performances, I'll still hone my craft right in front of my audience. I'll still be Bobby J but I intend to speak to hearts in a more powerful way.

This will be different. The total experience. My deepest fear IS NOT that I am inadequate. My deepest fear IS THAT I am powerful beyond measure. It is my light, not any darkness, that frightens others. I am a child of God and playing small has never served this world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around me. I am meant to shine. Through music, I was born to make manifest the glory of God that is within me. As I let my light shine, I give others permission to do the same. All I want is my presence to automatically liberate others to change their focus, to dwell on the things in life that are important, because 'To much is given, much is required (Luke 12:48).'

Welcome to my house. Get ready for a new aspect of my cover music -- from r&b, jazz, funk, Motown, to inspirational and Gospel. Enjoy!
